This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to get into counselling. Not only have I read it (5th edition) myself and intend to read it again soon, but I have also loaned my copy of this book to a number of trainee counsellors and all of the feedback has been positive.

Geldard and Geldard, a husband and wife counselling couple in Australia, start at the beginning in this text discussing basic counselling skills (micro-skills) and include counselling snippets with examples of the use of these skills. They also introduce topics like telephone counselling, crisis intervention, ethical issues in counselling and a number of other relevant issues for counsellors.

I highly recommend this text if you want to know the basics of counselling.
