Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT as it is often called, is a problem-solving approach to counselling and psychotherapy. In CBT, treatment can be provided in a relatively short period of time and the techiques involve helping clients understand their actions and take responsibility for them. As a client becomes more aware of his or her actions and better understands them, there is the possibility to recognise negative thought patterns and change the moods and actions that come from these thoughts. In dealing with negative thoughts, the client learns techiques that he or she can use to create more helpful, useful and realistic ways of looking at life experiences.
In a nutshell, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is an approach to counselling which promotes the idea – YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR THOUGHTS TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE!
Some of the emotional problems that CBT has found to be effective with include:
- obsessive compulsive disorder
- post-traumatic stress disorder
- anxiety
- panic disorders
- depression
- phobias
